UK-born, Oxford educated, Jeremy Eccles has been a journalist for 50 years. Heading for Australia via Hong Kong, he began a specialisation in the arts here in 1983. Initially concentrating on the performing arts he became a theatre, opera and dance critic and commentator on the ABC and in national newspapers, then a magazine editor. However, an early experience of a pan-tribal dance festival on Groote Eylandt introduced him to Aboriginal cultures, and an appreciation of First Nations artists soon followed. He has written almost 600 essays for the aboriginalartdirectory.com website, obituaries for the SMH, and many more for magazines such as Art Market Report, Eyeline, Art Monthly, Australian Art Review, Artist Profile and Art Almanac. Overseas, his work has appeared in the Financial Times, the Japan Times, Modern Painters and the Far Eastern Economic Review. His film, 'Art from the Heart?' was shown three times on ABCTV and at international festivals. In 2021, Jeremy was elected to a Fellowship of the Royal Society of New South Wales for his services to the understanding of Australian Indigenous art and culture.
