Gretchen Coombs is an Associate Professor of Contemporary Art at Adelaide University in Australia. She holds a PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology and an MA in Visual Criticism. Gretchen’s research and writing practice employs both traditional and creative approaches. Recent publications include New Materialist Affirmations: Creative Research Interventions in Methods and Practice (2025) and Care Ethics and Art (2022. Her monograph, The Lure of the Social: Encounters with Contemporary Artists, was published in 2021. She is the founder and director of the Low Impact Lab, a conceptual space where artists and academics can envision new ways of thinking about cultural value and evaluation.
